Fishing Our lakes and streams promise a good time to anglers of all skill levels.

The Kern River from Isabella Lake north to the Johnsondale Bridge is open to fishing all year. Bass anglers seem to have better luck fishing the lake from boats rather than from shore, but you can have success anywhere there are significant drop-offs. Don't be surprised by catching bass in excess of ten pounds.

Catfish are the most consistently caught species at Isabella Lake with heavy action from February through November. There have been stories about bottom dwelling lunkers having

pulled boats and kept anglers busy for more than an hour, and a number of 20-pound cats have been pulled from the lake. The Department of Fish and Game plants Isabella Lake with a number of trout in the 10 to 13-inch range, but it is not uncommon for stockier rainbows to weigh in at three to five pounds.

The Frazier Park area has some of the best native trout fishing in Southern California. Trout move around a lot, mostly for survival, and they are the toughest breed in Southern California due to high water temperatures and precarious water levels. Down on the valley floor, county-owned Buena Vista Lake near Taft is a favorite spot in the spring featuring stocked trout.
