Climate Overall the Kern County climate is semi-arid and rather pleasant. Average annual rainfall depends upon area, ranging from just under six inches on the valley floor to as much as 40 inches in the mountains.

Spring comes early, with temperatures warm enough to start wildflowers blooming in mid to late February. Summers are warm, marked by low humidity and comfortable evening temperatures through September. The nearby mountains offer a convenient respite on the warmest days.

Although snow does fall at higher elevations, winter temperatures are relatively mild in the valley and desert giving gardeners, hikers, golfers and other enthusiasts a chance to enjoy outdoors activities year-round.
